Jhené Aiko is officially beginning a new chapter. After months of teasing her next era, the R&B singer has announced that her long-awaited fourth studio album, Westside Whimsy, will be released on Friday, September 11, 2026. The project will arrive through Def Jam Recordings and marks Aiko’s first full-length studio album in more than six years.
Aiko confirmed the release through social media alongside the album’s cover artwork. The image features a close-up portrait of the singer against a teal-colored background, with crystal-like tears running down her face. The announcement finally gives fans a release date after Aiko spent much of 2026 quietly hinting that a new project was on the way.
The title Westside Whimsy first began appearing earlier in the year. In January, Aiko shared imagery connected to the name through her Instagram Stories, giving fans an early indication that it could be connected to her next musical era. She also collaborated with upscale grocery chain Erewhon on a limited-edition smoothie named Westside Whimsy, extending the project’s aesthetic beyond music before officially confirming the album.
More details about the inspiration behind the project emerged in April when Aiko participated in a wellness retreat in Healdsburg, California. During the experience, she explained that the new music draws heavily from her California roots as well as sounds and imagery associated with the 1990s.
Aiko specifically pointed to influences including West Coast car culture, surfing, beaches and the relaxed lifestyle commonly associated with California. She also discussed her love of road trips and the sense of freedom and spirituality she connects with her home state, suggesting that those themes will help shape the atmosphere of Westside Whimsy.
The California-centered direction fits naturally within Aiko’s career. Born and raised in Los Angeles, the singer has frequently incorporated West Coast imagery, spirituality, relationships and personal reflection into her music. Westside Whimsy appears positioned to bring those elements together while introducing another evolution of her dreamy and introspective R&B sound.
The project will serve as the official follow-up to 2020’s Chilombo, one of the biggest albums of Aiko’s career. Released in March 2020, Chilombo debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. The project also earned three Grammy nominations, further establishing Aiko as one of contemporary R&B’s leading artists.
Since Chilombo, Aiko has continued releasing music and collaborating with other artists, but fans have been waiting for another complete studio album. The six-year gap makes Westside Whimsy one of the longest breaks between solo albums in her career.
The announcement also comes shortly after Aiko teamed up with fellow California artist Larry June on “California Dream,” released in July 2026. The collaboration further reflected the West Coast atmosphere that appears to surround her latest creative direction.
With Westside Whimsy, Aiko appears ready to reconnect with listeners through a project built around California culture, nostalgia and the laid-back emotional style that has become central to her music.
While additional details surrounding the project are continuing to emerge, the biggest question has finally been answered: Jhené Aiko’s new album Westside Whimsy arrives September 11, officially ending the six-year wait for a new full-length studio release.
